Huang focuses on formal theory but also conducts empirical studies. His current research centers on the role of news media in authoritarian governance and political transition. He is also interested in democratic politics and electoral competition. During the 2009-2010 academic year was a postdoctoral research associate in formal and quantitative analysis in the Department of Politics at Princeton University. Huang has published articles in Political Research Quarterly and the Journal of Theoretical Politics.
