Fortunato's research is centered on improving understanding of the connection between voters and parties in coalitional democracies. One side of this research focuses on how coalitional voters cope with complexities of their political institutions. The other side focuses on how parties respond to voters in parliament by examining, for example, the construction of the legislative agenda, parliamentary debate, and legislative review.
Fortunato comes to UC Merced from Rice University where he earned his Ph.D. and Universität Mannheim where he was a research fellow in 2010-2011.
